grunge icons of the 90s

We first saw the 90s grunge trends reappear in 2014, after the aesthetic proved hugely popular on Tumblr. Today, we are seeing these trends re-interpreted the 2022 way, but to truly understand them we have to look at the subcultures very own icons who started it all.

Winona Ryder

The actress who is now widely known as Joyce Byers from Stranger Things, Winona Ryder was once fueling the world with grunge fashion inspo. Leather and denim were the only essentials in Ryder's wardrobe but her dark hair and lipstick combo were vital to finish off her looks.

Kurt Cobain

Arguably the grunge king, it would be illogical to leave Nirvana's Kurt Cobain off the list. Flannels and cardigans are often associated with Kurt, but his simple striped t-shirt outfit is one which has remained a fan favourite after it was first seen at the '97 MTV Movie Awards.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore was just 15 when the decade began, but she soon became a source of fashion inspiration for generations to come. Similarly to Winona Ryder, a leather jacket was a staple for the actresses grunge look, but Barrymore was not afraid to push further with her fashion. She wore waistcoats as tops, a trend set to grow this year, round sunglasses and her signature cross necklace.
